Seasonal variation of denitrifying bacteria and denitrification rate in the sediment of the northern Yellow Sea
Abstract:
The denitrification rate and denitrifying bacteria in sediment were measured using acetylene inhibition technique and most probable number (MPN) method in different seasons in the northern Yellow Sea. The denitrification rates ranged from 3.2 to 7.5 μmol/(m2·h) with the average of 4.85 μmol/(m2·h). The rates were 0.26 to 2.65 μmol/(m2·h) and 1.21 to 4.12 μmol/(m2·h) in spring and autumn, respectively. The denitrifying bacteria were 1.78×104~8.12×104, 1.18×106~6.18×106 and 0.72×105~4.50×105 cells/g in spring, summer and autumn, respectively. The result also showed that there were significant positive relationship between denitrification rate and denitrifying bacteria, particularly in spring and autumn. The correlation coefficients were 0.759 and 0.750 (P< 0.05) in spring and autumn. The results provided evidences for elucidation of the nitrogen cycling mechanism in the northern Yellow Sea.
