Dissolved inorganic carbon in surface waters around the Changjiang Estuary and Hangzhou Bay in summer
Abstract:
Based on the data collected from the area around the Changjiang Estuary and Hangzhou Bay during the field observation carried out on August 2004, concentration, distribution and composition of dissolved inorganic carbon and two related parameters, namely pH and total alkalinity, in their surface waters were examined in this paper. On the whole, the concentration distributions of DIC, HCO-3 and CO2(T)decreased latitudinally from west to east, while those of pH and CO2-3 were reverse. HCO-3 accounted for 80.33 % to 97.75% of the DIC with an average of (93.28 ±3.68)%; CO2-3 accounted for 0.61% to 19.42% of the DIC with an average of (5.58±4.03)%; CO2(T) accounted for 0.25% to 2.34% of the DIC with an average of (1.14±0.43)%. The integration of many factors including the interaction among different water masses, phytoplankton activities and so on influenced on the spatial distribution characteristics of these parameters, while the degree of influence on these parameters varied greatly from one to another for a certain influence factor.
