EXTRACTION OF VITAMIN B12 FROM ARCA SUBCRENATA LISCHKE AND EFFECT OF 60Co ON B12 CONTENT |

Abstract: |
This paper deals with the extraction procedures of vitamin B12 from Area Subcrenata Lischke and effect of 60Co on B12 content. One group of animals were maintained in a pool of sea water with 60CoCl2 (radioactivity of 60Co is 5×10-8Ci/1), another was cultured without 60CoCl2, and those collected from the sea were used as control. The amount of B12 was measured when the biological equilibrium of the uptake of 60CoCl2 was reached. The result shows that the amount of B12 in the animals kept in the pool with 60CoCl2 is 0.294μg per gram (fresh weight), the second being 0.142μg, whereas the control being 0.239μg, which implies that the animals under low level but long term gamma ray irradiation may enhance the synthesis of B12. |
