Abstract:
Microplastics (MPs) have gained attention as a widespread new pollutant, and industrial sources are considered to be an important source of microplastics in receiving rivers and adjacent marine waters, but there is no clarity regarding microplastic pollution in industrial source wastewater. In this study, the fugitive characteristics of microplastics in the influent and effluent of five coastal industries were systematically investigated, and the results showed that the five industries would generate 159.511 billion microplastics per year and release 46.155 billion microplastics per year due to the low treatment efficiency of the industrial internal wastewater treatment systems, and the coastal industrial wastewater sources are an important source of microplastic pollution in the offshore environment. The textile printing and dyeing industry produced the largest amount of microplastics in different industries with an average influent concentration of 84.75 pieces/L. The abundance of microplastics in the effluent from paper and plastic manufacturing plants, chemical plants and marine industries was similar, ranging from 32.00 pieces/L to 37.24 pieces/L. The lowest abundance of microplastics in the effluent from gold mining plants was 23.92 pieces/L. Different The microplastics in the effluent from different industrial sources were similar in shape and composition, fiber was the dominant feature, polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were the main components, and there were industrial differences in size and color. The characteristics of microplastics in industrial effluent were highly compatible with those in the ocean, which again proved the important contribution of industrial effluent to marine microplastic pollution. By revealing the concentration and characteristics of microplastics in industrial effluents from representative industries around typical bays, this study provides a scientific basis for research on the source-sink characteristics, migration and prevention and control of marine microplastics.
