NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF SUMMER UPWIND FLOW IN THE NORTHEASTERN SOUTH CHINA SEA

Abstract:
To confirm the existence of summer upwind flow in the northeastern of the South China Sea, the secular average wind field of July of 1939 - 1978 was used as summer wind field and Backhaus's 3-D baroclinic shelf circulation numerical model was used to numerically solve the flow fields in the northeastern South China Sea response to summer monsoon fields. The results indicated that even in mid-summer, Kuroshio Water still flows through the Bashi Strait into the SCS (KWFTBSS). The prevailing interaction between summer wind stress and continental slope topography results in divergence and ascent of seawater, low elevation and a cold seawater belt whose northern side has summer upwind flow west of 116.0°E. East of 116.0°E. KWFTBSS prevails, surface layer seawater converges and downwells to form high elevation warm water belts, and to generate northeastward current in the continental slope at the northern side.

The conclusion in present paper is that there is summer upwind flow west of 116.0° E in the northeastern South China Sea during the summer monsoon.
