Abstract:
In the present paper, the elements Ti, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Ga and Ba in 74 surface sediment samples from the East China Sea were determined by atomie emission spectrophotometry of Model ИCJI-28. The error in these determinations was< 25%.The concentration of these elements in the sediments was less than 1%. The results of the study are shown as follows. The average concentrations of Ti,Cr, Mn, Ni, Ga and Ba in the sediments appear to increase gradually with the decrease of grain slze of sediments. However, the concentration of Cu varies inversely with the grain size. In the region of the continental shelf of the East China, Sea. the average concentrations of Ni and Ga in the sediments appear to increase obviously with the increase of biogenous sediments. With the increase of the depth of sea water over the continental shelf, the concentrations of Ni and Ga increase at first and then decrease, while the concentration of Ba first decreases and then increases. From the continental slope to Okinawa Trough, the concentrations of all these elements increase, and among them, Mn increases more obviously than others. The elements Ti, Cr, Cu and Ga in the sediments were derived primarily from the mainland of China, while Mn, Ba and Ni came primarily from the open ocean adjacent to the East China Sea. The elements Ti in the sediments appeared to be transported in several different forms. However, the element Cu was transported within the crystal lattice of rock detritus. The rate of the transportation of Ti in the East China Sea was low, and its sedimentary rate was higher than those of other elements, but for Ni it was to the contrary. In the upwelling area, the trace elements were abundant.
