Abstract:
The coastal zone, as a transitional area between land and ocean, holds significant ecological value. Sandy coasts, renowned for their natural beauty and suitability for leisure activities, often attract considerable attention. However, unregulated human activities frequently exacerbate coastal erosion. Haiyang City, located in Yantai, Shandong Province, is well-known for its abundant sandy coastal resources, particularly the famous Wanmi Beach. In recent years, however, the beach has experienced varying degrees of erosion. This study aims to analyze the erosion and siltation patterns of the beach over time and evaluate the impact of different human activities through both qualitative and quantitative assessments of annual erosion changes. The study utilizes UAV aerial imagery of the main beach area and data from typical beach profile measurements to analyze erosion characteristics and changes along different coastal sections. Furthermore, the erosion patterns across the main areas of Wanmi Beach are examined in relation to various types of human activities in the region. The results indicate that the eastern survey area is experiencing mild erosion, mainly influenced by a reduced sand supply. The east and west sides of the middle survey area are undergoing erosion, while significant siltation has occurred on both sides of the Yangjiaopan estuary in recent years, particularly from 2021 to 2023, with a total siltation volume of 90 352.91 m3. The western survey area is more influenced by nearby beach farming activities, resulting in alternating patterns of erosion and siltation on the beach surface. Consequently, the substantial siltation near Yangjiao Bay is attributed to sediment deposition in the estuary, whereas the other two sections of the beach remain predominantly in an erosive state.
